The Relationship Between Glass Haze&Roughness | How to Measure

    2025-11-21

Glass, a transparent material widely used in construction, home furnishings, automobiles, and other fields, has always been a focus of attention due to its optical properties. Among these, haze and roughness are important indicators for evaluating glass quality, and they are closely related, affecting the visual effect and practical applications of glass. Today, we will explore the relationship between glass haze and roughness and introduce methods for measuring glass haze values.

      I. The Relationship Between Haze and Roughness of Glass

Haze, also known as turbidity, refers to the phenomenon where light transmission through a glass surface is unclear due to scattering. Haze is related to factors such as minute irregularities, impurities, particles, and internal bubbles or inclusions on the glass surface. When light shines on these uneven or defective glass surfaces, scattering and reflection occur, preventing some light from passing through and resulting in visual blurring and unclear images.

Roughness is a parameter describing the microscopic morphology of a glass surface, reflecting its smoothness and gloss. Generally, the rougher the glass surface, the higher its haze. This is because a rough surface more easily leads to light scattering and reflection, reducing light transmittance. Therefore, in the Glass Manufacturing process, by controlling the production process and the quality of raw materials, the roughness of the glass surface can be reduced, thereby reducing the generation of haze.

II. Methods for measuring glass haze values

The haze value of glass is usually measured using a professional haze meter. A haze meter is an optical measuring instrument based on the principle of light scattering. It assesses the haze of glass by measuring the degree of scattering of light on the glass surface and inside the glass.

The specific measurement steps are as follows:

①Place the Glass Sample to be tested on the test stage of the haze meter, ensuring that the sample surface is clean and free of scratches and contamination.
②Turn on the haze meter and set appropriate measurement parameters, such as light source type and measurement range.
③When the measurement program is started, the haze meter will emit light of a certain intensity onto the glass sample.
④A haze meter captures and analyzes the light transmitted through a glass sample and calculates the proportion of scattered light, i.e., the haze value.
⑤After the measurement is completed, the haze meter will display the haze value, and data can be recorded and analyzed as needed.

It is important to note that during the measurement process, the ambient light source should be stable and free from interference, and the operation should be carried out in accordance with the instructions for use of the haze meter to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the measurement results.

More to say, different measuring device also will little affect the measuring value. Let us see below example :
    1) We use haze measure hand meter to test the ultra cleAr Glass & AG display cover glass, the haze and transmittance are shown as below :

    2) We use haze measure tester to test above sample glass, then we get below result :

Let us conclude above value into a sheet for comparision:

    Haze Meter Name

    1st Sample (Ultra Clear Glass)

2nd Testing Sample ( AG Glass)

    Haze Value

    Transmittance

    Haze Value

    Transmittance

    Haze Measure Device-1

    0.89

    92.83%

    1.90

    91.57%

    Haze Measure Hand Device

    0.85

    92.74%

    2.60

    91.57%

So we can see, although the value is similar, different measuring device will get a tiny different result. But they are same after testing several times. So using different testing deivce, or using same device to test several times can help us to get a more exact value.

In summary, the haze of glass is closely related to its roughness, and its haze can be reduced by controlling the production process and the quality of raw materials. Measuring the haze value of glass requires a professional haze meter to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the measurement results. In practical applications, the haze value of glass can be used to assess its quality grade and applicable range, providing an important basis for the selection and application of glass products.
